Slate roofs are prized for their durability and elegant appearance, but over time individual slates can crack, slip, or go missing. Prompt repairs are essential to prevent water damage.

When Do Slate Roofs Need Repair?

The Repair Process

Step 1: Inspection

A qualified roofer will inspect the roof to identify all damaged or missing slates and assess the condition of the fixings and battens.

Step 2: Slate Removal

Damaged slates are carefully removed using a slate ripper, a specialised tool that hooks around the fixing nails.

Step 3: Replacement

New slates are cut to size if necessary and fixed in place using copper or stainless steel nails, or lead tingles for individual replacements.

Step 4: Flashing Check

The roofer will also check the lead flashing around chimneys, valleys, and abutments to ensure everything is watertight.

DIY vs Professional Repair

While minor slate repairs might seem straightforward, working at height is inherently dangerous. We strongly recommend using a professional roofer for any slate roof repairs. They will have the correct equipment, insurance, and expertise to complete the work safely.
